Littlest Pet Shop is a show that aired in 2012. It's based on Hasbro's popular toyline 'Littlest Pet Shop.' Just like My Little Pony was based on the toyline of the same name. I'm guessing after the success of My Little Pony they decided it was time to create another show, and hoped it would gain that success. Season 1 has just ended, and Season 2 will hopefully come near winter.
I hope you enjoy reading this review where I will cover the key points of this TV show.
Plot:
So, a young teenager named Blythe Baxter is moving into busy downtown city from her relaxed suburban neighborhood. She has to move her due to her dads (Rodger Baxter) job, he's a pilot. Blythe isn't to thrilled about this idea as she hadn't found out about this until today. As they're moving we can generally assume Blythe's mother does not live with her. They get to their new apartment and Rodger notices a mysterious petshop he didn't know about before. Blythe goes into her new room and she finds a window, which is a dumbwaiter. Not knowing what those things are actually USED for she goes in and falls to her doom. She doesn't die, but finds out she can talk to animals. They then tell her the LPS is closing...
It's an interesting plot. I'd give it a 8/10. There is some overused ideas in this plot. For example the girl moving into the big city and the missing mother. I found the idea she can suddenly talk to animals pretty rushed, as she just fell down and something trigged for her to talk to animals. I don't think this is the final and true story though. Also the whole idea of this mysterious place "Littlest Pet Shop" closing is a little bit fishy, as when Rodger was buying the house he must of knew they would be living above a pet shop. I find it interesting how it can then just close down if it just opened. So it's like the little shop that wasn't there before. This type of plot used lots of gaps for us people to fill in until it's finally revealed.
Characters
The characters are really well thought-out, besides the fact that they try to introduce in the first episode Blythe, her dad, The Biskit Twins, The main seven pets, Blythes friends, Ms Twombly, Biskit twins dad. Some other characters too. Considering there are so many I'll do short details on each unique character.
Blythe- A teenager whom is kind of afraid she can talk to animals at first, but eventually lives with it. She's sometimes considered crazy due to this. She's also a skilled fashion designer.
Zoe- A spaniel dog who is a natural diva/singer. She sings a number to introduce a little bit about the rest of the pets. Purple in color and sports a black beret.
Pepper- A comedian skunk. Gray and white in color. She's quite brash and her jokes aren't really the funniest yet, they're pretty well thought out.
Minka- A pink monkey. Her talent is art! She's painting loads of things, usually her painting involves splatting paint on the canvas and finger painting. She's pretty hyper and swings and hangs from the ceiling a lot.
Penny- A purple and white panda. Very sensitive so don't make her cry! She's a graceful ribbon dancer who sometimes gets tied up around the ribbon. She's very gentle and kind. Except can be quite moody and pretty scary when mad.
Vinnie- A green gecko. A dancer who thinks he's one of the best. He's a little bit klutzy which leads to some mix ups in his dance. He doesn't call himself that high in the smarts department, which may be true. Or he has his own unique intelligence.
Sunil- A timid, blue mongoose who is a magician. When his magic acts go the right way he's really good. They don't always work though. He's quick to react and jumps over small things. He's a little bit afraid but can quickly overcome this when he thinks of Cobras.
Russell- A orange hedgehog who is organized and keeps all the pets on track. He may be a bit OCD though, and may be a bit boring compared to the other pets. He's pretty smart, though.
The Biskit Twins- Two mean girls. They're the daughter of Fisher Biskit, owner of the largest ever petshop. Going by the names Brittany and Whittany and are super close twins!
Rodger Baxter- Blythe's pilot dad. He's not a good driver but a good pilot! His nickname is the Rodge
Ms Twombly- The old owner of the Littlest Pet Shop. She can sometimes be cleaning obsessive every once in awhile. Before she owned the LPS Ms Twombly was great Kung-fu quilting star, and creator. She cares for all the pets.
Youngmee- One of Blythe's friends who has the aunt, Aunt Christy who runs the Sweet Delights shop. She's usually helping her out.
Sue- Another one of Blythe's friends. She's a tomboy and has beat the schools record for long jump. Great in general at athletic things.
Jasper- The last of Blythe's friends. He has stated he likes video games and can sometimes be considered insensitive.
Buttercream- A yellow bunny who is introduced later on. Considered an eighth pet for some due to her frequent appearances in later episodes. Very crazy, and talks with phrases like 'Swippity Swiped!' and gives nicknames like 'Vinnie bo Binnie' Every time someone says what she does a unique move.
I give the characters a 7/10. Can be a little bit confusing.
Songs/ Voice-acting
Littlest Pet shop has some well-written songs by Daniel Ingram. Who has also worked with the popular songs of LP. Usually the songs are based off of the episode. Sometimes they can be a bit irrelevant. Loads of them are super catchy. There was even a ska number! So I give it 8.5/10
The voice-acting and singing is very good and I am proud of the voice actors for doing a good job of distinguishing the characters with other characters they've done. There's also some voices you may know from other shows you've watched. They must really work hard and they have creative voices! I give this one a 9/10
Episodes
There have been a few dud episodes but most of them are pretty creative. A lot of episodes have the 'could of avoided this plot' which I'm not a big fan of. Some plots in the earlier episodes where a bit predictable but it is a show made for a younger audience. I give it a 8.5/10
Animation
The animation is rather smooth. Like most shows there are some errors. Then again they have to make these pretty fast and ahead of time if they want to air one once a week. I'm pretty impressed. Most errors aren't really noticeable. Good work! 7.5/10
Overall, Littlest Pet Shop is like the next MLP! It is a great show and I would give it a 8.5 for all of the reasons I've stated above. Great work for all of the crew who put time into this. I hope it gets more fans in the future for all the hard work and thoughts they put into it.
Hope you liked my review!
